With these five tricks
lower your heating costs

How often do you ventilate?
How close is your furniture to the heating?
With a few tricks you can save a few hundred euros in heating costs.
This is particularly worthwhile in unrenovated houses.

1. One degree cooler: up to 115 euros with gas heating

The tip:
If you turn the heating down a little, you won't lose comfort. But it saves money. According to the German Energy Agency (Dena), the optimal temperature of living spaces is 19 to 21 degrees. It can be less in the bedroom, but not below 16 degrees.

What's the point?
According to experts, every degree less saves around six percent heating energy. For an average unrenovated single-family house with 150 square meters and 22,500 kilowatt hours of consumption per year, gas heating can save 1350 kilowatt hours and thus around 115 euros per year.
In the case of heating oil, it is 65 euros. In the partially refurbished old building with a consumption of 18,000 kilowatt hours, 1080 kilowatt hours and 90 euros are possible with gas heating and 55 euros with oil heating.

2. Intermittent ventilation instead of continuous ventilation: save up to 240 euros a year

The tip:
Permanently tilted windows cool a room and its walls, they also ventilate away the expensive heating. Therefore, experts advise better ventilation - several times a day for a few minutes. The best way to do this is to ensure that there is a draft through, for example, open windows opposite, then the air is exchanged even faster.
The non-profit consulting company co2online gives recommendations on how many minutes you should ventilate in which months according to the assumed weather: in October 12 to 15 minutes, in November eight to ten minutes, December to February four to six minutes.

What's the point?

3. Vent the radiator: save around 20 euros a year

The tip:
If there is air in the radiators, they cannot get really warm. On top of that, they also gurgle. You should therefore vent the radiators before the start of the heating season - by opening the vent valve on the side.

What's the point?
The consulting company co2online estimates that it is possible to save 20 euros annually on heating costs through ventilation. This corresponds to an assumed saving of 1.5 percent.

4. Move furniture away from heating: Avoid 15 percent heat loss

The tip:
Curtains that cover radiators or furniture that stand directly in front of them prevent the heat from being distributed well. Therefore, the radiators should always be kept free whenever possible.

What's the point?
The German Tenants' Association reckons that such a build-up of heat can cost the household up to 15 percent of the heat emitted.

5. Save around 155 euros a year with a thermostatic valve

The tip:
The desired temperature can be set via a programmable temperature controller, but it can also temporarily turn off the heating or reduce the heat supply to the room - for example when you are absent or at night when you are lying under the warm blanket. Even in tenement houses, residents can install their own thermostatic valves, speak to us.

What's the point?
According to co2online, about ten percent energy can be saved with programmable thermostats. For a single-family house with 150 square meters
and eight radiators, replacing the 15-year-old thermostatic valves with programmable models can save 155 euros a year. The price for the new devices is 10 to 50 euros per radiator.
